silly hair: the sequel

Auntie Anna came home from Alaska today.
Papa and Isaac have been spending lots of time together too.

Isaac even likes to be fed by Papa. Notice the loving look in his eyes. Ahhhh.

And take walks with him.
One of Isaac's cousins has now developed a new hypothesis about babies and hair. According to Grandma (Isaac's grandma :)), today, Lucia said, "Malachai (her little brother) has little hair. And Isaac has big hair."

silly hair

It is over 100 degrees here. So, we gave Isaac a bath, as we have been doing generously the past few days. I thought I had better try a different angle on the bath picture, since I have so many. We have a cute whale bathtub for him. :) I like it.
Isaac's little cousins evaluated him two weeks ago when Grandma was down in Eugene visiting Aunt Christy. Aunt Christy reportedly said something like, "Look at Isaac. Isn't he cute?"

The answer: "He's cute, but he has silly hair."

Their little siblings did not have much hair, so of course, babies are not supposed to have hair. Hair on babies is silly.

drool is the new rule

First of all, here are some pictures from Isaac's time hanging out with Papa these last few days when I was in Eugene at school.

Thursday, when I got home from school, we reveled in the fact that there would be no more homework that night and went for a family walk to the park with my personal favorite baby carrier for walks - our Baby Bjorn. I always feel like since it's a Swedish thing that it's very appropriate for me, but really I think it's just comfortable for everyone. We had a great time swinging. Evidently Henri had already brought Isaac to the park to swing before and he had startled both times, but by this point he was already an old hat at it, so he was pretty darn calm.

We wanted to find some baby sunglasses for Isaac, but these were all they had at Fred Meyer. They still look pretty cool. Isaac looks gangsta.

Then, later I found some polka music on Youtube and we danced and sang to that. We being Isaac and I. I think Henri was making some food or washing dishes or being a responsible adult in some capacity. And I was singing about rolling out the beer kegs.

Finally, yesterday Isaac had his two month check up. If you can't tell from the picture, he's getting pretty fat. He has little manboobs. He's in the 75th percentile for weight, but between the 90th and 95th for height so I guess that's probably just how it goes, and then I think his head circumference is around the 50th percentile finally. It was around the 25th at first, so it's cool that he doesn't have a super tiny head to go with his big body anymore. What that translates into in measurements is 12 lbs 11.5 oz (I think the gain is finally slowing down a little), 24.5 inches long, and 15.75 inches head circumference.

The other thing Isaac had to get were his shots. He had to get seven of them, but only three pokes. Then, for the rest of the day he was pretty tired, fussy, and generally not too happy with the world. Hopefully by Monday he's totally over it though. Today's already quite a bit better.

I did forget to ask the pediatrician about the fact that when Isaac eats, sometimes it sounds like he's got a kind of wet voice during or after. I don't know for sure if it's a problem, but I think it's best to ask, since I heard something about that during one of my classes.

We also went to Eugene to meet up with this Jeff Lang guy that my Aunt Christy told Henri about. It was cool, although maybe Isaac was not too excited about the car ride at that point.

Also, last evening Isaac was looking at his hands and then he touched my shirt and tried to grab the lettering. I think he's getting more understanding of his hands all the time. On an unrelated note, he's also drooling a bunch.

I think that's about it for right now! The morning bath has been served and Isaac is just sitting there calmly while Henri pours water on him. Did I ever mention that I love these boys?

Actually, we just took Isaac out of the water. He was getting a little pruny.

Henri was singing a cute song to Isaac yesterday to Isaac that was a direct adaptation of the opening song to this old French cartoon that he watched when he was little:

2 months

Today Isaac is two months old.
I came home from school and there was some random dude sleeping on our couch...
I decided it was unnecessary to kick him out though. He smelled pretty good and he wasn't causing any problems.

Grandma and Uncle Greg came to visit him today, and he got a very nice card from Auntie Barbara and Uncle Theo too! Isaac is definitely filling out more all the time!

Here is Isaac getting a bath again. We are guessing his baptism will go smoothly, because he likes water so much. We will see.

Highlights of the week so far:

Too much homework, too little sleep, but...

The week is going by quickly

My pants got soaked with pee that was not my own.

And, finally, we just got two cute videos of Isaac laughing.

And now, we are both going to bed. I am soooooo excited not to have to put Isaac to sleep and then stay up three more hours writing a paper! Just one more day then only one more week.

potty training and other accomplishments at 8 weeks

Isaac is eight weeks old today! Doesn't he look quite a bit different than when he was born?
Here's the sassy boy again.

Check out the triple chin on that baby. I guess they do get fat by 8 weeks. Good thing though! We compared his foot to his baby footprints, and his toes completely hang over where the toes used to end. So, they have grown a whole toelength.
Also, I noticed that the cartilage in his ears is getting harder, more grown up. When I was changing his diaper just now, I noticed him definitely start to look at his hands. The way I could tell is that he went cross-eyed to try to focus on the one hand, then he brought it to his face to touch his face. It won't be long before he figures that one out.
Sometimes, though, I think he still looks like Michael a lot.

We decided to potty train Isaac, and we figured you can never start too early. So, we are habituating him to the seat. And look! He went in the pot!

Okay, so actually there was a momentary crisis as Isaac was without a diaper for about a minute, so he really only did it halfway by himself... Nevertheless, we are proud of our little son for trying out the big kids' pot at just 8 weeks post-birth!

I lost the other camera (Grandma's nice one). Is it in Grandma's purse? Her glasses got left here too.

Happy Birthday Henri and Mama!

Here's Isaac the first time he went to a restaurant, McGraths last Thursday. He was very well behaved until he needed a diaper change at the very end.

And here he is requesting the jumping game from Henri.

separation anxiety

So, this last week was my first week of classes. I have to take 4 four week classes (all in the same four weeks) this summer as part of the requirements for this grant I am receiving that will fund my tuition for the next four terms. It's really an excellent tradeoff because this means that I won't have to work during that time and can just go to school and spend the rest of my time with Isaac. However, it is from 9-4 Monday through Thursday, in Eugene, where we don't live yet. So, Isaac stayed home with dad for the first three days while I commuted back and forth and didn't have enough time to pump on a lot of the breaks we had. That was a little uncomfortable. Still, Henri greatly improved his baby-sitting skills and is now an expert. They had fun together. And, we got to snuggle in the evenings in Isaac's favorite way, seen below.

On Thursday, Isaac and his Grandma came with me to Eugene and went to see Grandma Hurliman and Aunt Christy and Uncle George and all his little cousins. Evidently on Wednesday and Thursday he slept a lot when I wasn't there. I think it was because of a broken heart. He was sad that his Mama wasn't there. Yesterday we made up for it though by spending the whole day together. I didn't get one iota of homework done. I hope today works better as far as that is concerned, only because I have one 3-4 page paper due Monday and one 4-5 page paper due Tuesday that really should get done this weekend. I think this weekend will be the most intense, because in a way we are trying to do all the things we should have done before class this week as well as the things we have to do before class next week. Monday and Tuesday kind of breezed by though. It probably helped that we got out early on those days and I got to come back home right away. On Highway 99, a bunch of hay blew onto the road from the fields and you had to slow down driving through it. The next day, I saw some ODOT guys parked on the side of the road, looking up at the telephone poles. Huge bunches of hay were hanging from the telephone wires. You knew they were thinking, "How the heck did all that get up there?"
On Wednesday though, I really missed little guy. That class did not get out until 4. I've read that a study found that on average, women who work part-time are happier than women who work full-time or are full-time homemakers. The first part of the week, I would say I agreed. It is nice to get out and learn more, and feel like you are going to be helping others too, but still spend time with your baby. However, by Wednesday, I realized that this must be referring to women who work part-time after their babies are a certain age, maybe three months or something. I felt like I must be missing out on something really important that was happening. Evidently Isaac did start to chuckle while I was away, and now he does these funny half-laughs. They are like the start of a laugh, and then he just leaves it at that. So, now he has lived up to his name. I guess it wasn't that hard. Isaac means "he laughs". Yes, it is a verb. I think it's awesome to have a verb as a name.
Thursday was better because Isaac came down with me so I got to see him up until right before class, at lunch, and right after class. I love this boy. He just smiles when he sees me, but I can tell he missed me too. I am really lucky that after these classes are over, I have until the end of September to give him my undivided attention. It is really nice not to have to work, as I already said.
Here's a picture of Isaac when he was at home playing with Papa. He was having lots of fun, as you can see! He is starting to get a lot more calm when necessary things must be done. This includes fingernail clipping and nose clearing. For the fingernail clipping, I decided I would show him it was okay by clipping my fingernails in front of him. He was a bit more compliant after that. Also, yesterday his nose was so plugged up that he had to breathe fast, but I was nervous to suction his nose because in the past he hated it. However, we got back from my doctor's appointment and he had been breathing hard all the way back, so I decided it was time to suction his nose whether he liked it or not. He was actually really relaxed, and just watched me. I think he was glad his nose was finally getting cleared out so he could breathe, and so he didn't fuss. He is just getting to be a bigger boy every day. Speaking of that, I brought him into the pediatrician's because his intestines had been making some super-bizarre noises. He checked out fine, though. They weighed him and he is now 11 lbs 15 ounces. I think that's a healthy weight gain. It doesn't seem like as much as the last time, so he's probably adjusting a little more.

Well, I guess I have to start writing that paper sometime. Now seems like a good time.

Isaac's cradleboard

Craig's mama made Isaac a beautiful cradleboard.

In fact, there should be a word that means more than beautiful, but applies to objects. Exquisite, maybe?

Isaac was very calm as we put him in it.

He really liked his own personal cradleboard.

He felt quite content, all snugged up.
He was so happy about his cradleboard that he started smiling and telling his Mama how much he liked it.
It took her a week to do all the beadwork on the top. I can believe it. It would take me much longer. It is just so pretty! I have a doctor's appointment this morning. Perhaps I will bring it along in case I need to set him down somewhere. I think I'll make another post to summarize the last few days. These are a lot of pictures.

just another day

Today was my first day of classes for the summer session. I have to say it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The time went by quickly. I was a little distracted during some of the class, thinking about little guy and his precious toothless grin that has developed in the last week. Henri did a great job babysitting though, and it looks like little guy needs about ten ounces to make it through the time I am gone. Just fifteen more days to go.

Isaac gets to test out the newest edition of the Ages and Stages screening test, which just added the 2 month questionnaire with this version that came out in May. I'm excited to see how he does! Right now he's pushing the keyboard away with his foot. "No more of that, Mama," he says, "it's time for another fun-filled night!" Last night he woke up at 2 am and refused to go back to sleep until 5 or so. Not cool. I think we will try a bath tonight in hopes of relaxing him more. On a more positive note, he is starting to appreciate that diaper changes result in a more comfortable situation. He's also grabbing onto things like shirts, and still burying his face in my elbow from time to time. We went to Newport for 4th of July. Alrighty, it's bath time!

Cheese Boy

Little Mister keeps smelling like cheese... even when I wash his neck several times a day... so his new nickname is Cheese Boy (or Mr. Curds n' Turds if he is being sassy). He is snuggling with me right now in his new favorite way - burying his face in my arm and falling asleep. It's a little strange... I think he can breathe.

Anyways, we tried to walk to Fred Meyer this morning, but little Cheese Boy got hungry on the way, and then I noticed his diaper was too dirty to continue, so we went home. It is going to be hot today for sure, because it's already warm and the breeze is not very strong. Luckily we are going to Newport so I can get my permanent retainer fixed.

The important news of the morning is that Isaac is going to be baptised August 9 at the 11:00 am Mass at St. Mary's in Corvallis. So, you are all invited. If you are a particularly important party (i.e. Mike & Kayleen) I'll try to call you to make sure this works before confirming it, but I know you are on vacation and I don't want to forget! I hope everyone can come!

We had a little conversation this morning on our walk. It went like this:
Gina: It's going to be warm today.
Isaac: Wha?
Gina: Warm, as in hot.
Isaac: Oh.

No one to blame

Today we drove all the way to Eugene for a book I couldn't find at the bookstore or elsewhere. I was really mad about it, because it was a "Recommended" text but we needed it for our assignment, which I thought was due Monday (hence the emergency trip). Then I looked at the syllabus more closely and saw that the assignment was not due until the second week of class. So I made a trip which takes at least two hours total, with someone who was bound to start screaming his head off and did a few times on the way back, which turned into a three and a half hour epic journey, for nothing. This makes me mad too, but then I have no one to blame but myself.
I am wiped out today. I guess I didn't sleep well last night, so I tried to sleep in during Little Guy's "morning nap", which only lasted one hour this morning and was followed by two hours of fussiness. By the time he finally fell asleep again, I figured we had better get going to Eugene before it got near the predicted high of 94 degrees. On the way back, I was mad and tired and seriously considering just dropping out of grad school because the whole experience was so terrible. It had better be easier once we move down there. At least from what I've seen, even the most disorganized faculty members in CDS are more organised and less ambiguous about which textbooks are needed than this syllabus was. I think I'm trying to shift the blame again.
Isaac was just nursing again. It's cute - he's been grabbing onto my shirt lately when he nurses, as if to anchor himself there, or maybe he's just a really serious eater. Actually, he is a really serious eater. It will be fun to weigh him again sometime and see how his weight is coming along.
